My father was born in 1944 in a polygamous family. He did not undergo any formal education due to financial constraints and lack of proper focus and investment in education. He ended up being a security guard in one of the public universities in Kenya. He had to leave my mother and siblings behind in the rural home while he braved the cold and poor working conditions to put bread on our table. At the time, his meagre earning of Kes 5,000 per month was not enough to feed a family of eight. By the time he was retiring in 2009, his children were either in or about to join high school. His plea with the security firm to extend his employment contract for at least four more years fell in deaf ears.
At the time of his retirement, I had just received an admission letter to a National School Secondary School. My father’s terminal dues of Kes 90,000 could not even cater for my admission fee and other preliminary requirements, even after revising admission to a Provincial school.
This devastating experience was a turning point. I swore to, one day, establish a foundation that would cater for the education needs of the bright children of security guards. My mission is to support that one child and source of hope for that one security guard and breadwinner as they safeguard your buildings, businesses and functions. Would you walk the journey with me?
